Rolling Forward: Inside CAW’s In-House Paving Process

This means fewer disruptions and better roads for our customers.

At Central Alabama Water, fixing a leak is only part of the job. Restoring the road is just as important. Today, that work is happening faster and with the customer in mind every step of the way.

With an in-house paving process, CAW is cutting turnaround time by up to 60 days, getting streets back to normal quicker and smoother for the communities we serve.

The team is built on experience. Many of the crew came in with a working knowledge of the paving process, bringing hands-on skills that helped this crew pave the way from day one, delivering quality work and hitting the ground running.

For George Chapman, distribution foreman, the work is more than just a task, it is something he takes pride in.

“Paving has always been a passion of mine,” Chapman said. And that passion shows in the details.

“If it’s too low, we build it up and pack it until it’s level and smooth,” Chapman explained. “If it’s too high, we knock it down, repack it and bring it back to surface level.”

That initial cold patch keeps roads safe and drivable right away. From there, the team prepares for a permanent fix using hot mix paving, built in layers to hold up over time.

“You’re building it so it lasts,” Chapman said. “That’s how you get a smooth, quality surface.”

The difference is not just in how the work is done, it is how quickly it happens.

“In about three days, you know if the asphalt has settled,” Chapman said. “That’s enough time to go back and make it permanent.” So, for customers, that means fewer disruptions and better roads.

The work also reflects a team that is willing to step in and take ownership.

“I wanted to learn something different and be part of it,” said Allen Lane, a CAW employee working on the paving crew.

This effort goes beyond efficiency. It reflects accountability, a commitment to customer safety and pride in the work. Our paving crew represents real progress, helping us respond faster and serve our customers better. At the end of the day, it’s not just about fixing what’s underground. It’s about making sure every road we touch is safe, smooth and built to last.
