A Day in the Life: Field Service Technician

For 23 years, Robbie Ruffner has kept Central Alabama Water customers connected—one work order at a time.

Every day begins the same way for Robbie Ruffner—but no two days ever really feel alike. He walks in, picks up his work-issued iPad and is immediately met with a full slate of work orders waiting for him. From turning on water service for new customers to rechecking meter readings or replacing damaged equipment, his tasks are as varied as they are essential.

Behind each work order is a customer counting on things to run smoothly, and Ruffner knows that. Whether he’s troubleshooting an issue or making a quick fix, his goal stays the same: keep the system running and the customers satisfied.

Ruffner serves as a Field Service Technician for Central Alabama Water (CAW), where meeting customer needs is simply part of the job. It’s a role he’s grown into over more than two decades—23 years, to be exact. During that time, he’s worn a lot of hats, gaining experience in departments like the meter shop and distribution. That hands-on background gives him a deep understanding of the work and the people it impacts every day.

“It’s rewarding in ways, where the customer can’t help themselves, we come in and we help them,” Ruffner said.

We spent a day shadowing Ruffner to get a firsthand look at what his job involves (see the video below). No matter how many work orders fill his iPad, he approaches each one with the same mindset: get the job done right and take care of the customer.

“It’s a fast-paced job, there is a lot of orders that needs to get done and it’s possible to get it done.”

Speed isn’t the only thing that drives Ruffner on the job. What really keeps him going is a clear sense of purpose—understanding why his work at CAW matters. That perspective, combined with his faith, helps guide him through the demands of his daily routine.

“I’ve been with this company for a long time, and it helps to know that I’m suppose to be here at this time and season,” Ruffner said.

From one customer to the next, Ruffner sees his role as a worthwhile and dependable career path. He doesn’t talk about the work as repetitive—in fact, he insists there’s rarely a dull moment while tackling his daily list of orders. For him, it’s all part of the routine—just another day in the life at Central Alabama Water.
