Local TV news highlights cybersecurity improvement at CAW

CAW CTO talks on WBRC-TV about boosting cybersecurity to protect the water.

Cameron Holly, Chief Technology Officer for Central Alabama Water (CAW), was recently interviewed by WBRC 6 News to discuss the critical role cybersecurity plays in protecting water utilities.

The interview followed a recent tabletop exercise hosted by the CAW in partnership with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The exercise brought together teams from across the organization to walk through potential cyberattack scenarios, evaluate response strategies and identify best practices for strengthening cybersecurity preparedness.

That collaboration prompted WBRC 6 News, the Fox affiliate in Birmingham, to take a deeper look at how the CAW safeguards the customers it serves. Holly was interviewed by Jonathan Hardison, an anchor, managing editor and investigative reporter for WRBC 6 News.

“So, despite the fact that we have a great team and a great security team at that, we want to make sure that we’re getting input from other resources,” Holly told WBRC 6 News. “And the Department of Homeland Security implemented this resource for a reason to help, especially with critical infrastructure like ours, to help organizations to really shore up their cybersecurity, take best practices across the nation and really work together with us to identify where we’re strong, where we’re weak, and how to shore all those things up.”

The CAW is the largest water utility in Alabama and is fortunate to have a team dedicated to defending the organization and its customers against cyber threats. Holly sees this as an area where the CAW can assist other water utilities.

“So, to do a tabletop in the future where it’s not just us, but bringing in other utilities to discuss best practices,” Holly explained to WBRC 6 News. “And what, if anything, we might be able to do to help each other so that hopefully one day statewide we’re getting the same level of security and support in every utility across the board.”

Holly brings nearly 30 years of experience in information technology and operations leadership to Central Alabama Water, with a proven track record of delivering results across diverse industries, including international operations.
