As temperatures rise, so does the demand for water.
As summer temperatures rise across central Alabama, so does the demand for water. Behind the scenes at Carson Filter Plant, operators are working around the clock to make sure families across Central Alabama Water’s service area safe, reliable drinking water all season long.
Located near the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, Carson Filter Plant sees firsthand how closely summer; and water go hand in hand. From filling swimming pools and watering lawns to splash pads, golf courses and car washes, warmer weather brings a major increase in water usage throughout the area.
“We see the demand go up,” said Operator Kevin Moore, who has worked for CAW for 19 years, including the past 11 at Carson Filter Plant. “We have to make adjustments with our process and with the system.”
The plant primarily serves areas around Center Point, Pinson and East Lake. During the summer months, operators carefully monitor water trends throughout the day, especially during peak afternoon hours when usage is at its highest.
“We try to stay ahead of it,” Moore explained. “We know about what time demand picks up and what time it falls off.”
For the team at Carson Filter Plant, preparation and teamwork are everything. Operators work together across shifts to make sure treated water is ready before demand reaches its peak.
“We’ve got a great group of people here,” Moore added. “Everybody is willing to step up and help each other. It’s the people I work with that make it worth it.”
While many families spend the summer cooling off outdoors, the team remains focused behind the scenes, monitoring tank levels, water quality and system performance to keep water flowing safely and reliably throughout the season.
“Most people just turn on the faucet and expect water to come out,” Moore said. “They don’t realize the work that goes into making sure they get it.”
Whether it is a splash pad full of kids, a neighborhood cookout; or staying hydrated while outdoors, water plays a part in nearly every summer memory. At Carson Filter Plant, operators are working together every day to help make those moments possible.
